Dear reader, did you know that 50% of the cells in and on your body are not from you? You’re a walking, breathing host for a whole world of microbes. This relationship is not necessarily parasitic or extractive, though - our bodies have evolved in reciprocity with the viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that live on our skin and in our gut, ears, mouths, and other body cavities. The human microbiome, of course, is what I’m describing.

I'm about to deliver a series of posts that I hope you will enjoy. They will give you the bare bones, the need-to-know, and a deeper dive for those who want it. You’re going to come away knowing:

  • Practical hacks to improve the diversity and health of your body’s microbiome
  • An understanding of how your wellness and your microbiome are intricately intertwined
  • How anthropology, evolution, and the microbiome are connected, and how your microbiome is a living catalog of where and how you’ve engaged with the living world

For the upcoming content, I did my own research (links will be provided throughout!) and incorporated perspectives from thought leaders in functional, precision, and integrative medicine, as well as input from farmers and ranchers engaged in biodynamic, regenerative techniques for cultivating food. Additionally, I interviewed an incredible rising physician and scientist, Cameron Pauly (future M.D., Ph.D. in anthropology). His research examines the relationship between evolution and the oral microbiome.
